2008 Golf Tournament

The Brampton Flower City Centennial Rotary Club inaugurated its first annual Golf Tournament event for charity. This year's event saw close to one hundred participants and was hosted on the beautiful grounds of the Woodbine Golf and Country club. Celebrities in attendance were: Clifford Ivory, and Orlando Bowen formerly of the Toronto Argonauts, in addition to Damon Allen, formerly of the Toronto Argonauts, and North American pro football record holder for most passing yards. Refreshments were served in the morning and Tee time commenced approximately at noon. Nearly 100 participants enjoyed mostly sunny skys, and the tranquil surroundings of rushing rivers and chirping song birds that seemed to define the boundary of almost every hole on the course - giving the impression that the entire valley in which the course is situated is a series of islands, each with its corresponding native flag and hole. Though there were some brief intermittent showers throughout the afternoon, they had a negligible impact on the tournament as the weather reports had called for much worse giving the impression only days before that the entire tournament would be rained out. The showers seemed to strike parts of the course while sparing others. All participants were able to finish the course by 7pm as the clouds broke by mid- afternoon. During evening dinner, Former President Dhaman Kissoon attributed the cooperation of the weather to divine intervention. His remarks were greeted laughter followed by applause when he stating that though there were intermittent light showers over some of the holes, those who donated most generously to the days event were completely spared from the rain. Following a sumptuous dinner, and a raffling of prizes by Argonaut Clifford Ivory, awards were handed out for best overall standings in the days event. Peel Police Chief Mike Metcalf delivered a speech in which he showered praise on the efforts our club's fundraising events and service to the region of peel, amongst relaying many other issues regarding community safety to the days participants gathered for dinner. Proceeds From the largest Golf Tournament organized to date from a Rotary Club in the Region of Peel have been donated in part to the Breast Cancer Society of Canada. As Rotarian and Event Coordinator Dalkeith Palmer put it: "We look forward to next years event where we can make an even bigger impact on the community by surpassing this years event by opening up to a greater number of participants."
